Love Letter

Want a really great card game that only takes a few minutes and can fit in your pocket then have a look at Love Letter...

All of the eligible young men (and many of the not-so-young) seek to woo the princess of Tempest. Unfortunately, she has locked herself in the palace, and you must rely on others to take your romantic letters to her. Will yours reach her first?

Love Letter is a game of risk, deduction, and luck for 2–4 players. Your goal is to get your love letter into Princess Annette's hands while deflecting the letters from competing suitors. From a deck with only sixteen cards, each player starts with only one card in hand; one card is removed from play. On a turn, you draw one card, and play one card, trying to expose others and knock them from the game. Powerful cards lead to early gains, but make you a target. Rely on weaker cards for too long, however, and your letter may be tossed in the fire!

There are many different versions of Love Letter all based on the same mechanic but with different themes. Currently we have the following in stock along with the original...

Dr Who the Card Game

Due in this week is an older card game which is new to us...

Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans – The list of threats is endless and no place in the universe is ever truly safe from danger, but there is one man who has made it his mission to defend the defenseless, help the helpless, and save everyone he can: a mysterious stranger, a force of nature who has seen his own planet die, a madman with a box.

In Doctor Who: The Card Game, players act as the Doctor and his companions to defend specific locations while sending the Doctor's enemies to conquer locations your opponents are trying to protect. Each player starts the game with one location, and cards in the deck consist of attackers, defenders, locations and support cards. To start a turn, you draw two cards, pick up any cards banked from a previous turn, and take the three cards passed to you earlier by the player on your left. You play or bank cards until you have only three in hand, then pass those to the player on your right and end your turn.

Attackers target specific locations and earn points for the player wielding them if they're in play at the end of the game. Defenders try to remove attackers so that the location owner scores points for protecting the location. Support cards provide different abilities, such as enlarging your bank or providing time points (which can be used to draw additional cards). Whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins!

Traitor Rules for Stak Bots

With the new expansion of Stak Bots due out in a few months, it seemed like a good time to revisit and old favourite.

Here is a new variation of the traditional game of Stak Bots from creator Tom Norfolk...

Traitors Variation Rules
- Setup: 9 in each player's Stak, 3 in hand

- Draw 1 card at the start of each turn

- You CANNOT scrap/discard cards directly from your hand as an action

- You CANNOT play cards as an action onto your own Stak (however doing so as a result of an entry effect, eg. Callout Bot is allowed)

- You CAN (and must) play cards onto your opponents' Staks instead

- You CANNOT end your turn with more than 3 cards in hand.

- Attacking and scrapping from the top of your Stak is done as normal.

What does this create? A weird mode, where you are forced to play your hand onto your opponents' Staks during your turn. When you choose to do so and what you choose to get rid of is crucial and it gives a very different way of thinking to the game. It also completely changes the usual applications of some cards; for example turning up a Bountiful Bot on your Stak and drawing an extra card becomes a curse. You also have to predict more what other players are likely to do with entry effects you give them and play cards accordingly to force their hand... well, your hand. Wait... whose card was that?!

Worth a go I think, fancy a game on Tuesday?

MTG Draft- The Basics

With the release of Eternal Masters, one of the things that we will be doing at KD Games In the coming weeks is drafting. For many of you this is not a new concept, but with players of all different experiences that may not be the case for everyone.
For those of you completely new to drafting, the concept is simple. A number of players (usually eight, but it could be as few as four and as many as twelve) sit around a table with three booster packs. Each player opens his or her first pack, looks through it, and selects a card. The players then pass the packs to their left. This process continues until all of the cards from the first pack have been selected. Then, the players open the second pack, select a card, and pass the pack to the right. Once that pack is gone, players then open the final pack, select a card, and pass to the left again.
After all of the cards have been selected, you will have forty-five cards in front of you. You must then construct a deck of at least forty cards including basic lands.
Drafting can be overwhelming for new players, so here is simple guide to follow when drafting. Keep in mind that this is a beginner’s guide. If you have ever drafted in a Grand Prix or the Top 8 of a PTQ, this article isn’t for you.

Know the Cards!
First, know your format! What booster packs are you going to be drafting? It’s a good idea to know what cards are in those sets. If you have a look on Gatherer you will be able to find a full list of any set that MTG have released.
So, how do you know what cards to pick in your Draft? There is a simple acronym that is commonly used as a guideline for pick orders. That acronym is BREAD. You want to make your picks in the following order:

B – Bombs!

Bombs are super-powerful cards that are hard to deal with. Usually, if you play a bomb, unless your opponent answers it quickly, you will win the game.
If you are unsure of what a bomb is when evaluating a pack, ask yourself these questions:
  • Is this card a big creature that is difficult to remove and hard to block? Any big creature with abilities that can swing the game in your favor is a bomb.
  • Does this card have some sort of mass effect that provides card advantage? Does it kill creatures, make your opponent discard cards, or make your opponent lose a huge chunk of life?
  • Does this card provide a huge, game-breaking effect? Planeswalkers, mass removal, etc
Bomb cards should be picked immediately if you see them—they are the most efficient ways to win games!

R – Removal!

The next cards you want to be looking for are cards that remove creatures or other problem cards. This can include burn, destroy effects, or creature enchantments such as Claustrophobia or Bonds of Faith. Removal is very important in Draft decks, and usually, the more removal you have, the better your deck will perform.
Not all removal is permanent removal. Some spells, such as bounce effects, only remove the creature for a short period of time. Although not permanent, that turn in which the creature is in your opponent’s hand will allow you to put significant pressure on him. Your opponent then has to spend all of his mana to recast that creature.
Some removal doesn’t actually kill a creature directly, but it does so in combat. These cards are commonly referred to as combat tricks.
Finally, some removal doesn’t look like removal at all—it’s just a creature with flash. Flash creatures are also considered combat tricks.
E – Evasion!
The next cards you want to draft are creatures with evasion—creatures that are hard to block. Usually in Limited games, players have a lot of random ground guys in play, and no player can attack beneficially. The game will then go to time and end up in a draw. This is where you need creatures with evasion. Anything with flying, fear, or that are unblockable are considered creatures with evasion.
A – Aggro!
Next step in drafting your deck is picking up creatures that round out the deck and fill up your mana curve. You want to be able to cast a creature every turn if possible. Therefore, it’s important to have guys that have different mana costs. A good rule of thumb is to have between thirteen and seventeen creatures in your Draft deck. Take a look at this deck that I recently drafted:

D – Duds!
The last types of cards you will be drafting are the bad ones. These are the cards that you will be picking up toward the end of the pack and usually don‘t want in your deck.

These last five or so picks in each pack are the picks where you should keep your sideboard in mind. Yes, you do have a sideboard in Draft. Any card you don’t end up playing becomes your sideboard, and you can sideboard any number of cards in between games. It doesn’t even have to be a one-for-one swap.

The situational cards that aren’t good enough for your maindeck but can be great in certain matchups are the types of cards you should by picking up for your sideboard.
So that is a very basic overview - there is lots more that can be said about DRAFT as it is one of the best ways to play MTG, but if this sounds like something you would enjoy the next thing you should do is play.

Ticket to Ride Card Game

Due back in stock this weekend is ...

A New Train Adventure Begins!

The Ticket to Ride Card Game delivers all of the excitement, fun, and nail-biting tension of the original Ticket to Ride board game, but with several unique game-play twists in a new stand-alone, card game format.

Players collect sets of illustrated Train cards, which are then used to complete Destination Tickets - routes between two cities depicted on each ticket. But before their Train cards can be used, players must face the risk of "train robbing," where another player may force them to lose their hard-earned cards.

Contains 96 illustrated train car cards, 46 destination tickets, 6 big city prize cards, and a rulebook.

Part of the Ticket to Ride series.

To begin the game, each player is dealt train car cards and destination ticket cards. All these cards are kept secret from the other players until played or scored. Each player may keep all his ticket cards, just one or any number in between. A player's turn has two parts: first the player moves face up train car cards from his Railyard to his face down, On-the-Track stack; second the player may perform one of the following actions: 1) draw more train car cards, 2) place train car cards in his Railyard, or 3) draw destination tickets. Like the original Ticket to Ride board game, when a player chooses to draw train car cards, he may choose from the five face up cards or draw from the top of the face down deck. When placing cards in the Railyard, a player may place two or more cards of the same color including locomotives which are wild, or three cards, each of a different color. Also when placing cards in the Railyard, a player may not play cards of the same color as those currently present in his Railyard nor of the same color as those present in any opponent's Railyard unless he plays more of that color than are present in the opponent's Railyard. If the player plays more, then the opponent must discard his cards of that color. This is called "Train robbing." When drawing destination tickets, a player draws four and may keep any number of them including none.

When the train car card deck is exhausted in a two or three player game, each player gets one more turn and the game ends. In a four player game, completed tickets are scored and discarded train car cards are reshuffled into a new draw deck. When that deck is exhausted, each player gets one more turn and the game ends. At the end of the game all tickets not previously scored are scored. The point values of completed tickets are added to a players score while those of tickets not completed are subtracted. To complete tickets, players match train car cards in their On-the-Track stack by color and quantity with their tickets. Each big city bonus is awarded to the player with the most completed tickets having that city. These bonus points are added to the player's score. The player scoring the most total points wins.

Kickstarter - Oligarchy

WELCOME TO THE DYSTOPIAN WORLD OF OLIGARCHY

Oligarchy™ is a card game based in a dystopian near future.
You will play the role of a powerful Oligarch. Cunningly use the resources, items, and personnel at your disposal to crush your opposition! Set your allegiance to one or more of the 8 powerful factions and experience the reality of power struggles, hideous comebacks, desperation moves and GLORIOUS VICTORY!
The world of Oligarchy™ is tough and brutal; with many different card types including, characters, scenarios, incidents, items, professions, and resources; the possibilities are almost endless!
Will you be the lone survivor or a footnote in history? Let the games begin!

GAMEPLAY

Oligarchy™ is a game for 2+ players.  For each additional player you should add 20 minutes to the game time, so a 4 player game would likely take just over an hour.   The game is played like many trading card games with each player taking their turn, deploying their cards and trying to take down their enemies by various means.
In Oligarchy™ you choose to align 12 points of 'Power base' to one or more factions.  Cards will have faction requirements on them to show you their allegiance, this helps your decision making when preparing your decks for battle.  Rarer cards sometimes have no faction requirement so you can play them in any deck you make.
Cards are played by spending your amassed Affluence and Influence points.  A card's cost is found in the bottom purple and blue circles.  All Power, Affluence, and Influence points are tracked with the supplied spinners to keep your game tidy and fun.
The game is played with a simple turn structure detailed here:

Let's look at an example game layout.  You might choose to start the game and masquerade as a corrupt politician with 6 points of Power in the Government faction and 6 in the Crime faction (Player 1).  Your opponent may have chosen to moonlight as a TV evangelist type with Religious and Media Power base (Player 2).  The narrative gives the game its gritty charm so have fun with the stories you create.  After the game gets underway a play example might look like this:
